Serbian international Nemanja Matic reveals his best ever match was last season’s Europa League final.
Chelsea star Nemanja Matic has had an eventful last few years, leaving Stamford Bridge for Benfica only to return three years later for a hefty fee of £21m.
During his time in Portugal, the 25-year-old midfield star played in a number of high-profile matches and showed exactly why Chelsea bought him the first time in 2009.
After winning the equivalent of the League Cup in Portugal in 2012, the following season turned out to be one of the most dramatic seasons on Benfica’s long and proud history.
The Portuguese giants were on the verge of a historic treble when the team ultimately imploded in the final two weeks of the season, missing out on all three trophies.
One of those trophies - the Europa League final – was contested by Benfica and Matic’s current club Chelsea. The Blues ran out 2-1 winners, and despite the obvious pain in defeat, Nemanja Matic reveals to Chelsea fc.com that it was this game which he holds closest to heart.
“For me I will never forget the Europa League final between Benfica and Chelsea. That was a special game for me. We lost but it was the best game because we played in the final and it was also nice to play against my old team, and now my team again!”
Nemanja Matic has arguably been the January transfer window’s best buy, and with a bit of luck, he might be able to abolish the painful memories of missing out on a treble in Portugal as early as this season by claiming the Premier League title.
