On this day: Arsenal record signing to leave and Liverpool want Richards

Arshavin

On the 12th April 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 12th April 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 12th April 2013…

Arshav-out

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger made it clear that he expected the club’s then record signing Andrey Arshavin to leave at the end of the season.

The Russian international had looked a good buy in his first season at The Emirates but went on to become a disappointing Alex Hleb impersonator for the side.

He was coming to the end of his contract and Wenger revealed no plans to offer him a new deal in North London:

"I don't think he will stay here, because he doesn't play enough. He is at the end of his contract at the end of the season, then he will decide what he will do. But he has shown 100% commitment at absolutely every session, he has been an example for everybody. He has been questioned many times about his commitment, but if you saw him every day you would respect him for what he does on a daily basis. He has been absolutely fantastic."

Arshavin has since returned to Zenit St Petersburg - where his late career struggles have continued.

Blue for Red

Liverpool were being heavily linked with a move for Manchester City defender Micah Richards. The England international had been struggling for a place in the Citizens side for some time and injury problems had also hindered his once astronomical progress.

But Brendan Rodgers wanted him - and had reportedly made that clear to the City board.

No deal ever did happen, but this summer who knows?

Richards has already intimated that he wants to leave the club this summer in order to gain regular first-team football.

Varane in vain

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly informed his board to do whatever they could to get hold of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

The French youngster had starred against them in the Champions League not long before this story and it was reported Fergie had his heart set on signing the player.

No deal ever came off.
