Liverpool legend: Rooney is better without RVP, who could be sold

Robbie Fowler has stated that it could well be the end of the line at Old Trafford for the Dutch centre forward.

Manchester United’s forward line of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj looks as exciting and able as any in the Premier League – on paper.

However the reality has been that although all supremely gifted individually, key combinations in the final third have been lacking for the Premier League champions this season.

After leading the Old Trafford side to the Premier League last season with his goalscoring exploits, Van Persie has had a subdued campaign with injuries and dips in form blighting him.

His link-up with Rooney in the United attack has not been effective, with the pair not hitting it off this term.

Former Liverpool man Robbie Fowler has been discussing the situation at United and has stated that he would not be surprised if Van Persie was one of those players that were shown the door this summer.

"When Rooney and RVP were playing together it was a bit of a mix-match,” Fowler told talkSPORT. “They weren’t getting results.

“Since RVP has been injured and out of the side, Rooney seems to have upped his game.

“I really rate Rooney and think he could play as a lone striker, he can play with anyone. He can play a multitude of roles.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if Van Persie left in the summer.”

In some of United’s darkest moments this term, the lack of passes between Rooney and Van Persie was highlighted in the media.

Many United fans are eager to see Mata play more centrally alongside Rooney, with Van Persie’s role in the team under question.
