Forget Ozil, Wayne Rooney is 'nicking a living'

Wayne Rooney

Shouldn't the ludicrous treatment doled out to Arsenal's record signing be equal to Manchester United's best paid player?

Here's a game of spot the difference:

Two highly paid stars play against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, and clearly unfit, both have poor games.

One is German, one is English... yet while the display of one is glossed over, the other is lambasted as 'simply not right'.

The two players are Mesut Ozil and Wayne Rooney, and it is the Englishman who has got away without the harsh treatment.

And considering his lack of fitness, that's really the way it should be - and it should be David Moyes who needs to be asked the real questions.

Just like it should have been Arsene Wenger's reluctance to withdraw Ozil in Munich until half-time which was criticised, with the German later admitting he was injured as early as the second minute.

It just highlights the absurd treatment meted out to Mesut Ozil in early March, with an article in The Mail writing:

"At £42.5m Mesut Ozil is the most expensive export in the history of German football. After his performance in Munich you wouldn’t pay two-bob for him... Ozil, the highest-paid player in the history of Arsenal, is nicking a living."

The attack brought widespread ridicule from Arsenal fans, with even legend Ian Wright describing it as a 'cheap shot'.

Ozil came in with sky high expectations, but the criticism needs to be balanced when he is under par, and the hope is for the player he will get back to his top form when he returns from the injury suffered against later this month.

For Wayne Rooney, it seems England's golden boy is immune from such criticism in a World Cup year. It's just a shame for the striker he did not really show how the £300,000 per week he will earn from next season is really money well spent.

Another poor World Cup, and the negative headlines may begin to start writing themselves for the Manchester United star.
