Wenger gives injury update on forgotten man Abou Diaby

The France international is on the verge of a first-team return after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Although the summer reacquisition of Mathieu Flamini answered Arsenal’s need for a defensive midfielder in the squad, the presence of Abou Diaby should give Arsene Wenger another option in the centre of the park.

However, the French midfielder has suffered from serious injury for some time and has been limited to a mere 15 Premier League appearances for the Gunners over the last three seasons.

With Diaby not making a single showing for the North London outfit this season, his presence in Wenger’s squad would be easy to overlook.

However, the French coach has stated that his countryman is on the verge of a return to action.

“Diaby is back to full training next week,” he told the club’s official website.

“He could be available soon, maybe in a couple of weeks.”

When fit, Diaby has shown that he can be a dynamic and versatile midfielder and has been likened to Patrick Vieira in the past due to his physique and style of play.

However, the injury prone star’s future at Arsenal remains unclear given his lack of opportunities in recent years.
