James Milner: Liverpool are title favourites, not us

James Milner claims that Liverpool, and not Manchester City, are the favourites to win the Premier League.

Manchester City midfielder James Milner has claimed that Liverpool are the favourites to win the Premier League title.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are currently in pole position in the league table with 74 points from 33 matches, two points clear of second-placed Chelsea and four ahead of City, who have two games in hand.

The Reds and Manuel Pellegrini’s team will take on each other at Anfield this Sunday, and there have been suggestions that the winners of the contest will go on to win the championship. Liverpool still have to face Chelsea on Merseyside, while the Citizens have to visit the city to confront Everton next month.

A number of players in City’s squad have already tasted Premier League success under Roberto Mancini two years ago, while Liverpool have not conquered England since 1990.

Milner believes that this could prove to be a major factor: the Reds players buckling down under pressure as expectations continue to pile up on them.

However, the England international claims that the title will not be decided on Sunday. There are a number of matches still left, he argues, and they will just as important in the race as the blockbuster encounter on Sunday.

"There is pressure on all the leading clubs and it's all down to who handles it the best,” the 28-year-old told The Sun. “It should be a great game on Sunday. We've been here before and have won the title recently, whereas Liverpool haven't won for a long time... It's still in our hands because if we win seven games, we'll be the champions, but Liverpool are in the box-seat because they are top and have the points already on the board so for me, they have to be favourites as things stand.

"Liverpool are flying at the moment and are looking very strong. We know that if we win all our remaining games, we would win the title - and the same applies to Liverpool - so it's definitely one of the biggest games of the season."
