Report: Rooney's injury more serious than first thought

The Daily Star have indicated that the Manchester United striker could well miss the rest of the season.

Wayne Rooney has been one of Manchester United’s only positives this season but the attacker was not at his best during the side’s Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich during the week.

The England international is nursing a chipped bone in his toe, but played through the pain at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

However, as a consequence the United forward is expected to face a spell on the sidelines, with The Daily Star today stating that the attacker could well be unavailable for the rest of the season.

The newspaper indicate that Rooney will intentionally sit out the rest of United’s domestic campaign in a bid to ensure he is fit to feature at the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

United have little to play for as they seem dead in buried in the quest for fourth place, while Rooney is essential to England’s chances this summer in Brazil.
