The Metro ran a story this morning which suggested Wayne Rooney has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a toe injury.
Rooney wasn’t quite his usual self in the Champions League game against Bayern Munich earlier this week and it appears that his season may be over with David Moyes apparently keen to ensure no further harm comes to one of his most important players.
United have nothing to play for over the rest of the season other than trying to secure sixth place, which would mean Europa League football on Thursday nights throughout next season.
Considering the attacking reserves available to the current side, there is no sense in Moyes taking any further risks with the forward which could mean a chance for Danny Welbeck or Javier Hernandez to lead the attack with Robin Van Persie also out of action.
There’s also the opportunity for someone like James Wilson to be given some game time in the first team as Moyes has already flirted with the idea of using the teenager this season.
How Rooney’s injury will affect him ahead of the World Cup this summer is unknown but with Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez already missing the tournament in Brazil, Roy Hodgson will be starting to sweat.
Moyes could well have looked at the situation, talked with Hodgson and decided to take a safe approach by not using Rooney any more this season to ensure that he’ll be fit to play for England this summer.
The rest could be beneficial for the striker but then there is also the risk that he’ll head off to the World Cup lacking a little bit of form and match sharpness, which could be the difference in tight games against Italy and Uruguay.
Here’s what Manchester United fans are making of the reports on Twitter.
Rooney picks up his usual pre World Cup injury, exactly the same happened last time. right after we played Bayern away as well in the QF's.— United Religion (@Unitedology) April 11, 2014

If Rooney is out for the rest of the season, then he'll have missed a total of 26 weeks through injuries since 2011, twice as much as RvP— Tanmay (@RegistaTan_) April 11, 2014
