Ahead of Sunday’s trip to Anfield, Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has been speaking about the aspects of the Liverpool side that have impressed him.
Toure also predictably highlighted that the Reds have only had to play one game per week on most occasions this season due to lack of European commitments.
When asked by Jamie Redknapp in an interview for the Daily Mail, the midfielder said:
“Defensively they have been good but in midfield they are so strong. Steven Gerrard is fantastic and has so much experience. And Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge have been unbelievable. They score goals like a machine. Things are going to be tough for our defence and if we make a mistake, or we are not concentrating 100%, we are going to pay.”
It is interesting that Toure mentions Liverpool’s defence, as it has been criticised on several occasions this season having leaked 40 goals in the current compared to the 29 conceded by City, and Chelsea have only conceded 24.
Liverpool have been praised for their strike force scoring a combined total of 49 out of the 90 goals the Reds have scored this season from Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. Also with Steven Gerrard being reinvented in the holding midfield role – the midfield has several other options which has energy, craft, pace and strength.
The defence has been the big weak spot for Liverpool this season having kept ten clean sheets in their 33 league games. They have had a tendency to leak goals having conceded to every side in the bottom half of the table.
Toure may feel Liverpool’s defence has improved having picked up three clean sheets in March from the five games they played, and may anticipate a difficult battle to add to his incredible goal tally of 18 in the Premier League from midfield.
And as for Toure’s thoughts on whether this weekend’s game could decide the title, he said: “No doubt about it, the game will be very important.”
