It’s little surprise that the Saints have been linked with a move for Burnley striker Danny Ings considering the injury to Jay Rodriguez, which is likely to keep him out of action until next season.
Should the south coast club complete a deal for the Championship hot shot then it may make them more willing to do a big money deal for Rodriguez this summer and that’s something that Arsenal can take advantage of.
The Gunners need another centre forward to play with and instead of Frenchman Olivier Giroud.
There is merit in Arsenal forking out what would likely be close to £20 million for the English forward as the only English player to score more Premier League goals this season is Daniel Sturridge.
He’s well suited and matched to the way Arsenal like to play football and he’s grown used to being individually successful in a side which likes to use a similar style of football to the Gunners.
Arsenal could also be aided by the fact that Rodriguez’ current injury will put off other interested parties, giving them a clearer run at getting the deal done during the summer transfer window.
It would be controversial for Arsene Wenger to go after a player who he wouldn’t be able to use until next season had already started but it’s a window of opportunity he should be able to take advantage of.
A knock on effect needs to be triggered for Arsenal to have a shot at getting their man because if Burnley, currently second in the Championship, gain promotion, they are likely to be less willing to allow Ings to head off to the Saints as a new signing.
There is absolutely no way Mauricio Pochettino will let one of his best attacking players leave, regardless of the money Arsenal would offer, unless he has a ready made and talented replacement.
Arsenal could be furthered delayed in any pursuit and hope of signing Rodriguez if Tottenham come further into the equation, creating a bidding war for Ings which would increase the chances of the Saints missing out on a Rodriguez replacement.
