Arsenal pushed hard to sign Julian Draxler of Schalke in January, but the German side refused to deal on their highly rated young star.
The German side are now reaping the benefit of that decision, with the 20-year-old finding his form in recent weeks.
Draxler was in excellent form on Friday evening, helping Schalke to a routine 2-0 Bundesliga home win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Goals were scored by Max Meyer and Jefferson Farfan, with Draxler a thorn in the side of the visitors throughout.
Draxler completed 90 per cent of his passes, and created four goalscoring opportunities - an equal number to the entire Frankfurt starting XI, and more than anybody on the pitch.
He also had five efforts on goal himself, two on target, excelling in a position wide on the left.
It's a position which is not his preferred on, but his versatility allows Schalke to play Meyer centrally, and it's out on the left where he would be most likely to feature for Arsenal, with Mesut Ozil the main man through the middle.
Draxler has four goals and seven assists this season, but has not registered one of either now in any of the last seven matches he has started.
Yet given the high level of performance in his all round game, it is only a matter of time before that changes.
With a release clause of £37 million in his contract however, whether his general play alone will convince teams, without influencing games directly, whether he is worth the money this summer is another matter.
