VIDEO: Referee refuses to shake hands with Leighton Baines

Leighton Baines appears to be denied a handshake from referee Martin Atkinson. Reasons have been suggested but still...

Last weekend saw Everton defeat Arsenal in convincing style - running out 3-0 victors at Goodison Park.

Goals from Steven Naismith, Romelu Lukaku and a Mikel Arteta own goal did the business in a game completely dominated by the Toffees - who are now just one point behind Arsenal with a game in hand.

But there was another incident in the game that many have forgotten about - as former team-mates Leighton Baines and Arteta went knocking heads over an incident in the second half.

Arteta allegedly used a little too much elbow for Ross Barkley’s liking in a second half challenge - and after Barkley shoved the Spaniard to the ground things got out of control.

Baines intervened - and the pair had a heated discussion.

But after the game they shook hands, forgot all about it and even looked to have a laugh about the incident.

That’s the thing about football - once the final whistle goes more often or not all is forgotten.

But not, it seems, according to Martin Atkinson.

The referee - who was obviously involved in the incident appears to have refused to shake Baines’ hand after the game - as picked up by these pictures on Everton FC’s official website.

Professional boxer and avid Everton fan Tony Bellew shared this Vine on Twitter of the incident - and it is quite astonishing to see a referee acting so disrespectfully.

In a time when referees, after the recent howlers by Andre Marriner and Anthony Taylor, are being vilified Atkinson’s actions certainly do not help.

Even his assistant looked shocked!

Some have suggested that he was distracted by an incident involving Seamus Coleman and Nacho Monreal - but he could have at least extended an arm to Baines rather than causing even more controversy.
