Match to be played on Sunday 13th April 2014 at 13:37. Venue: Anfield, Liverpool.
Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool head into this weekend’s game against Manchester City knowing that a win will put them in a great position to win the Premier League.
The Reds have been one of the most entertaining sides to watch this season and it will be fascinating to see how they play against their direct title rivals in front of a crowd that is used to seeing them win at Anfield.
Here’s the side Rodgers could go with for the game.
GK – Simon Mignolet
The Belgian is the number one at the club and this is a very important game for him in direct opposition to Joe Hart.
RB – Glen Johnson
Johnson has been one of Liverpool’s most consistent players since he returned from injury. Expect him to be solid at both ends of the pitch.
CB – Martin Skrtel
The Slovakian central defender provides strength and aggression in the heart of the defence. He’ll be an important player in ensuring Liverpool don’t get bullied.
CB – Mamadou Sakho
Sakho will probably keep his place in the back four because he’s a big and imposing defender, which is important with someone like Yaya Toure rushing forwards.
LB – Jon Flanagan
Flanagan, confusingly, is probably a player that City will target. However, he’s thrived when big sides have tried to attack him so far this season.
RM – Raheem Sterling
Sterling’s pace on the counter attack is going to be key. He can really get at the City back four and cause them problems.
CM – Jordan Henderson
Henderson will be one of the first names down on the team sheet. He’s Liverpool’s most versatile player and will be important in defensive and attacking senses.
CM – Steven Gerrard
This is a massive match for Gerrard for several reasons. His teammates are sure to look to him for inspiration if city get on top quickly.
AM – Philippe Coutinho
Rodgers is likely to task Coutinho with dancing in between all the pockets of space which open up in front of and between City’s defence.
LM – Daniel Sturridge
Sturridge has extra motivation for this game because it’s against a side he used to represent. He’ll get forward and play centrally when Liverpool are on top.
ST – Luis Suarez
Suarez is Liverpool’s key player. If he fires then he can make up for poor performances in other key areas.
