Now 33-years-old and playing for Al-Rayyan in Qatar, it could have been very different for Lucho Gonzalez.
A former fans favourite and six-times Primeira Liga winner with FC Porto, the 43-time capped Argentine international has revealed he almost signed for Chelsea.
In an interview this week with Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, the midfield general dubbed 'El Commandante' reveals a simple choice of agent could have made the move happen.
Lucho: "I regret not signing on with [super agent] Jorge Mendes. Chelsea had interest in me, but I had the wrong representation." #FCPorto— Portista (@FCPortoWorld) April 9, 2014
Mendes is renowned as an agent who makes moves happen across Europe's top clubs, representing Jose Mourinho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Radamel Falcao and Diego Costa among others.
Lucho himself moved to Marseille for £16 million in 2009, and returned to Porto when his contract expired in 2012.
Just this January he left to move to Qatar, a decision he admits was for financial reasons, and says he aims to return to Porto one day to prove his leadership skills again, as manager.
The central midfielder has 82 career goals on his CV, including 18 in the Champions League, netting against Liverpool, Real Madrid and PSG among others.
Now at 33 his career may be entering it's twilight years, but the thought that he could have been plying his trade at Chelsea certainly makes you wonder what may have been.
