GIF: Insult to injury as Chris Smalling smashes ball at Moyes' groin

Bayern Allianz Arena

Manchester United’s Champions League exit was likely painful enough for manager David Moyes but defender Chris Smalling added insult to injury.

The Red Devils’ 3-1 defeat on the night saw them exit the Champions League to the holders Bayern Munich 4-2 on aggregate at the Allianz Arena in the quarterfinal second leg on Wednesday night.

Patrice Evra’s 57th minute strike was undone less than two minutes later when Mario Mandzukic equalized for the Bavarians who progress through to the semifinals now ahead of the soon to be deposed English champions.

David Moyes was gracious in defeat, despite his disappointment and the manager was praised in the Sky Sports commentary box for his brave decision to select Chris Smalling ahead of Rio Ferdinand but after this, he might wish he’d picked the veteran centre-back.

Smalling appears to attempt a clearances which rebounds off Franck Ribery straight into David Moyes’ nether regions – whether the ball hits him in the stomach or the groin has yet to be confirmed officially by the club but it could well hamper Smalling’s hopes of making the World Cup in Brazil with England if coach Roy Hodgson decides he is a danger to the touchline staff.

Smalling has not commented on the incident, which saw Moyes stoop in pain, nor does he appear to apologize to the manager who may well write the incident off as just another sucker punch at the Allianz Arena.
