7 goal, 15 assist Man United linked star: I want to stay, that's why I...

Atletico Madrid starlet Koke has no intentions of leaving the club - for a long time.

Just in case anybody had lost sight of how talented he is, Koke fired Atletico Madrid into the semi-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday night as a reminder.

At Barcelona’s expense, no less. On an evening when the crossbar seemed to have it out for Los Colchoneros, the 22-year-old ensured qualification by hitting the back of the net just five minutes from kick-off.

That said, football fans absolutely hadn’t forgotten the Spaniard’s enchanting ability before his midweek heroics.

Because between La Liga and European competition, Koke has notched seven goals and 15 assists. That type of prolific production is difficult to ignore - especially as he’s played a key role in bringing Atletico to new heights.

And it’s those gaudy statistics and his undeniable ability that led Manchester United to be linked with Koke on a daily basis throughout January.

Well, that and David Moyes’ need for reinforcements of his calibre in midfield.

But as was the case with Ander Herrera, Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara last summer, the Red Devils wouldn’t get their hands on the La Liga star.

Instead, he’d sign a new contract at the Vicente Calderon with a reported £50m release clause.

And just in case United - or any other club, for that matter - had ideas of stumping up the cash to pry him loose, Koke has now said he wants to stay with Atletico anyway.

“I am very happy and do not think about leaving the club,” he told A Bola.

“I feel at home and want to stay here, that’s why I accepted a long-term contract.”

And with Atletico Madrid in with a chance for a La Liga and Champions League double, it’s easy to see why.

Luckily for United, they seem to have moved on to Toni Kroos already at this point.

But Koke’s words stand as a warning to any suitors that he has no interest in leaving the Spanish capital, nonetheless.
