On this day: Benitez wants Anfield return and £120m windfall for Manchester United

Rafa Benitez

On the 9th March 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 9th March 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 9th March 2013…

Gifts for Santi

Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla was voted the Gunners Player of the Month by the club’s fans.

The Spaniard won the award for the second month in a row after impressive performances throughout March - including a goal against Reading.

A year after beating off Abou Diaby to the prize the player is being linked with a potential Arsenal exit.

It comes after he stated to the press:

"I want titles and that is why I came to Arsenal," he said. "Every football player wants to win titles. We've gone many years without winning one. And if not, what I'll look for in my next destination is to have the chance to win.”

Benitez wants comeback

Rafa Benitez, at the time the Chelsea manager, was talking to the press about the potential to one day return to Liverpool.

The Spaniard managed at Anfield from 2004 and 2010 - winning he Champions League during that time.

He also mounted a serious title challenge for the club and spoke of his idea of a Merseyside return:

“I will return, almost certainly. What I do not know is when. My daughters and wife still live there. My idea is to train a competitive team. Why not in England? We will have to wait and see. Everything will be worked out.”

You might have to wait a while yet Rafa … as Brendan Rodgers looks set to stay for now.

Big bucks for United

Manchester United were celebrating a good day in the office - after The Red Devils penned a new multi-million dollar deal with insurance company Aon.

The American giant signed a deal worth £15 million per season until 2021 - an overall windfall in the region of £120 million.

Not bad - David Moyes should be able to fill his pockets this summer.
