Liverpool morning news, fitness boost ahead of City clash, Sakho on 'biggest game in 24 years'

A selection of the latest stories involving Liverpool Football Club this Wednesday morning.

Liverpool have received a fitness boost ahead of their huge title clash with Manchester City on Sunday according to the Liverpool Echo.

Daniel Agger should be fit after he picked up a knock on his knee which meant he missed the 2-1 win against West Ham United at Upton Park. It meant that Mamadou Sakho was given the chance to impress, and he did, meaning that Agger may miss out against City.

Manager Brendan Rodgers is quoted, saying: “It was a nice introduction to some parts of English football for Sakho.

“West Ham play a very direct game, and Andy Carroll is as good as anyone in world football when the ball is played up to him.

“Sakho coped really well with it, having been out of the side for so long. But I thought both centre-backs were very good.”

Sakho has said that Sunday’s game with City could be the club’s biggest match for 24 years, as it could go a long way to deciding the destination of the title.

The French defender said: “Ever since I arrived at the club, I said it. I told my team-mates that we are capable of winning the title.

“We have the quality and we just have to believe it. And – voila! – as the season progressed we saw Liverpool grow in strength playing such beautiful football.

“We’ve not stolen the position where we are today. We deserve to be where we are. We are confident about facing their strikers. City score a lot of goals but so do we.”
