Liverpool may be on the march toward the Premier League title but in the summer they were on the brink of losing their best player and losing out on their number one target.
In the end Luis Suarez stayed - but their main target decided to go elsewhere.
The target in question was Armenian international Henrikh Mkhitaryan of Shakhtar Donetsk - and they reportedly met his release clause of £23.6 million for the attacking midfielder’s services.
"Yes, I had many options. But I decided on Dortmund because I like the type of football that is played here…I have come to Dortmund to play and not to sit on the bench, as might initially have been the case in England."
Mkhitaryan has had some injury concerns this season - but overall his record of eight goals and nine assists is not bad - not mind-blowing but not bad.
What was mind blowing was how he managed to miss an opportunity so seemingly simple last night.
As Chelsea performed their own Champions League fight-back Dortmund were attempting their own miracle - and came within a whisker of taking Real Madrid to extra time.
Trailing 3-0 from the first leg they went 2-0 ahead thanks to a Marco Reus double against a Ronaldo-less Real.
And then came Mkhitaryan’s moment.
Slipped in by Reus he bored down on goal, cleverly hopped around Iker Casillas and was left with an empty net between him and potential infamy …
And this is what happened…
