Last summer, prior to Aly Cissokho’s loan move to Anfield, Liverpool were heavily linked with Granada left-back Guilherme Siqueira.
Sky Sports reported that the Reds were locked in talks over a possible move for what was something of a problem position for Brendan Rodgers’ side. But ultimately, Cissokho arrived from Valencia and Siqueira headed on loan to Benfica.
The 27-year-old could hold the key to any one of a number of possible transfer merry-go-rounds this summer, with any move to Real Madrid surely seeing Fabio Coentrao move on – possibly to Manchester United. But reports that a deal to take Siqueira to the Bernabeu had already been agreed have been dismissed by his parent-club.
As reported by Sky Sports, Granada president Enrique Pina told Radio Renascenca, “We have a big respect for Benfica at the moment. There is nothing signed with Granada or anybody.”
So could Liverpool make their move 12 months later than first planned?
Much depends on Rodgers’ intentions regarding Jon Flanagan and Glen Johnson, but even if those two players occupy the full-back positions, Liverpool are still going to need strength in depth given their impending participation in the Champions League alongside their domestic duties.
Siqueira has impressed for Benfica this season, becoming a regular starter in the second half of what will be a title-winning campaign. But with Liverpool sure to be on the look-out for worthy reinforcements, do not be surprised if the Brazilian is linked with them once more. In fact, I think he just has been.
