PSG midfielder Marco Verratti became the latest high profile player linked with a transfer to Arsenal this week.
Italian website TMW reported that the Italian midfielder is a player Arsene Wenger wants to add fresh energy into his midfield, but he certainly will not come cheap.
While The Metro claimed the midfielder could cost £17 million, Verratti is valued far higher by the French champions, likely to charge double that for a prospect who has been likened in his own country to Andrea Pirlo in style.
The 21-year-old was in action last night for PSG against Chelsea, defending a 3-1 first leg lead. Unfortunately for the Italian, he was substituted after 55 minutes with boss Laurent Blanc making a tactical change to bring on a player Arsenal actually bid for last summer in Yohan Cabaye, then at Newcastle.
It was far from a memorable night for Verratti therefore, even holding into account his side's loss, making just one tackle and one interception.
He did however complete 89 per cent of his passes, his 45 passes more than teammate Blaise Matuidi did all game (40) and narrowly less than another who played 90 minutes in fellow midfielder Thiago Motta (51).
Keeping a keen eye on the midfielder's display however, Arsenal fans on Twitter were less than impressed with his suitability for the Gunners:
Marco Verratti looks like an absolutely perfect Arsenal signing. Diminutive, technical and with a tendency to overplay it in dangerous areas— Ben Steele (@CaptainSte3le) April 8, 2014
All I can say is Marco Verratti is the last player #Arsenal should be looking at. Small, technical with no great pace. Have enough of those!— Keshava Raghuveer (@M0veandPlay) April 8, 2014
I was not impressed with Verratti over the two legs at all.— Nick (@MSP_Arsenal) April 8, 2014
Rather see Cabaye at arsenal if he's not getting regular games than Verratti— Curt. (@CurtisCov) April 8, 2014
