January came and went without Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger signing a new front-man, but it was not only Julian Draxler, Jackson Martinez and Rodrigo Moreno who were linked with a possible move to the Emirates Stadium.
Of course we all know what happened next: Arsenal signed Kim Kallstrom and their season slipped inexplicable away, culminating in their 3-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, just a week before a FA Cup semi-final against Wigan Athletic that could seal Wenger’s fate if it does not go his way.
And on the same day that Arsenal were losing to the Toffees, Destro was netting a hat-trick.
The 23-year-old Italian missed the beginning of the season with a knee injury, but after scoring one goal in each of his last four Serie A matches for Roma, he grabbed all three in their latest match against Cagliari.
Destro had just three shots on target in the entire match, and scored from all of them. He also had a 77% pass-completion rate.
That means Destro now has 13 goals in 18 league matches; not bad for a player who did not feature until December.
Will Wenger finally make a move for him this summer? Only time will tell. But on the day when Arsenal lost by three goals, a striker who could possibly have joined them netted that many on his own.
