The word ‘legend’ is often bandied around too much in the sport of football - but when I say it in regards to Tim Cahill I doubt any Everton fan would begrudge me this statement.
The former Toffees midfielder earned his status with his passionate displays, penchant for headed goals and the general affection he seemed to have for the club and its fans.
Nowadays Cahill is in America plying his trade for the New York Red Bulls alongside Thierry Henry - and at training on Monday he will have the bragging rights over his team-mate.
Cahill was watching the Everton v Arsenal game as a stateside fan earlier today - and was obviously pleased with what he saw.
Everton won 3-0 and of the selection of celebratory Tweets I am going to highlight this one from the player…
But more interestingly was his interaction through a Q&A on the site.
At some point he was always going to be asked about the possibility of an Everton return - and he certainly ruled nothing out.
Cahill has previously been linked with a return - usually through the medium of a Beckham-esque loan deal during the MLS offseason.
However a return is surely unlikely.
This is an Everton team looking toward the future, not the past, and as happy as many would be to see him return to Goodison Park it is surely not the right direction for the club to take.
Perhaps one day he might come back in some role - as a coach or ambassador - but even if he doesn’t he will always remain a legend and a fan of the club.
