In the summer of 2012 Franco Di Santo turned down the opportunity to remain a Wigan Athletic player - and became one of a few key players to leave the DW Stadium on a free transfer.
Di Santo is many things as a striker. Hard working, an excellent hold up man and a good foil for a pacy strike partner - but a lethal goal-scorer he is not.
However his excellent attributes have seen him play three games for the Argentina national team and of course attracted Chelsea to sign from Audax Italiano of Chile in 2008.
Despite being dubbed the ‘next Hernan Crespo’ it never happened in London for the youngster. But the 24-year-old found his place at Wigan - which has proven the stepping stone to a big Bundesliga move to Werder Bremen.
But he is in good form at the moment as Werder fight for survival.
He scored against Hannover last week - and added another against Schalke 04 yesterday.
The ‘next Crespo’ he might not be … but he is certainly enjoying himself at the moment…
