Only a day after Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger criticised the loan deal which Everton and Chelsea have in place, the Frenchman’s comments came back to bite him.
The Gunners boss argued, not for the first time, that he feels that loan deals between Premier League clubs are unfair.
Unfortunately for Arsenal, Sunday was a classic case in proving his point.
Ineligible to play against his parent club Chelsea, Jose Mourinho’s men have certainly benefited from their striker’s performances against Liverpool and Manchester City and his goal against Arsenal poured more salt into the wounds.
The Belgian international was instrumental throughout, causing havoc both in wide areas and through the middle.
The Gunners struggled to cope with the striker’s power, and after Lukaku’s fine solo goal added to Gary Naismith’s opener, the host’s victory became a formality.
Everton’s 3-0 win over Arsenal moves them up to within one point of the Gunners in the race for fourth spot and that last Champions League place.
After the game, Romelu Lukaku posted a celebratory picture on Instagram and left a simple message: ‘What a win! Congrats to my partners! The road is long but we’re on the right track!’
Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side will certainly be hoping for a repeat performance from their striker when Everton take on Manchester City in the coming weeks.
