Liverpool and Chelsea are not only fighting for the Premier League title this season, it also appears they are in direct competition with each other for the same players.
During the January transfer window, Chelsea pipped Liverpool to the signing of Egyptian international winger Mohamed Salah – much to the annoyance of the Liverpool faithful.
In the summer, however, Liverpool are aiming to turn the tables on their Premier League rivals and snap up highly-rated Benfica star Lazar Markovic.
According to The Mirror, Brendan Rodgers is willing to part with £20m to land the Serbian international.
The 20-year-old coveted winger has been described by many as an exceptional talent with a big future in the game, and despite having a contract at Benfica until 2018, it is highly expected that he will leave the club within the next 18 months.
Chelsea are well-known admirers of the youngster, and it has been reported in the past that Jose Mourinho’s men have an agreement in place to sign the star for €15m – though this has yet to be clarified.
The Blues may feel best positioned to land Markovic, with current Serbian international stars Branislav Ivanovic and Nemanja Matic certainly on hand to make the Benfica star feel welcome at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool, nevertheless, would be able to offer the youngster more first-team opportunities and he only needs to take a look at the likes of Raheem Sterling, Jon Flanagan and Philippe Coutinho as inspiration to what he could achieve in the Premier League.
