Liverpool’s march toward the Premier League title continued today - as they won a tight game against West Ham United 2-1 at Upton Park.
The fixture was controversial, mainly thanks to the worst refereeing display I have ever seen in the Premier League, but Steven Gerrard tucked away two penalties to lift Liverpool back to the summit of the table.
Next week they take on Manchester City in a crunch game which could end up deciding the destination of the title this season. If Liverpool win they will go seven points clear of City - who will have a game in hand, and seemingly give them the advantage in the Premier League title race.
And not many a fan or professional could begrudge one of their players such an opportunity.
Today’s goalscorer Steven Gerrard has won many things in his career. FA Cup and Champions League medals but never the Premier League.
The dominance of rivals Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal - with a little sprinkling of City and Blackburn Rovers - has seen Liverpool, one of the most successful teams in history fail to win the prestigious title.
For years now it has looked as though the season they missed out under Rafa Benitez was their last chance - and that Gerrard may never receive that coveted medal.
One player who would certainly like to see it happen is former team-mate Jonjo Shelvey.
The Swansea City star joined Liverpool in a £1.7 million deal from Charlton Athletic in 2010 - but left this summer for £5 million after failing to establish himself as a regular first-team player.
He took to Twitter last night to share his belief that nobody is more deserving of a Premier Leage title than Stevie G.
Here is the Tweet in question from his former understudy…
If theres one man in football who deserves to win the prem it's gerrard!! Absolute baller— Jonjo Shelvey (@shelveyJ) April 6, 2014
