Fallout 3: One of the best RPGs to date (Part One)

Fallout 3

Fallout 3 is an incredible futuristic open-world shooter and almost certainly one of the best RPG games you can get your hands on.

Fallout 3 is a well known title among many gamers. It is a huge open world RPG with an almost endless amount of gameplay, hundreds of side missions and hundreds of weapons. Nearly every building is fully accessible, a karma system is present which will affect how NPCs interact with you.and everything you do has either a positive or negative impact on the game-world. Not to mention this game has some over-the-top gore and disembodiment. If that isn't enough then there are five massive DLC expansions; Game of the Year Edition is highly recommended.

Arguably standing as the best video game of 2008 Fallout 3 won the overall Game of the year title and a Bafta award  amongst many other accolades such as "Game of E3 2007" by IGN and "Best Role-Playing Game of E3 2007" by Gamespot, Fallout 3 is one of the most expansive first person shooter/ role playing games you can get your hands on. The title is available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

The name "fallout" in this situation is very ironic since you will be finding it very challenging not to fall in love with this masterpiece.

The Background

In the year 2077, America was plunged into a nuclear war with China referred to as the "Great War" which resulted in a devastating nuclear holocaust leaving the survivors locked away in vaults. These vaults are underground nuclear bunkers which although served to provide safety from the nuclear explosions and radiation, also served much more sinister and evil purposes. The surviving residents would continue to live the rest of their lives in these underground structures.

The world is set in an alternate historical retro-futuristic era which is built on an interpretation of the 1940s and 1950s. The technology during this era was advanced enough to create laser weaponry, gene manipulation and artificial intelligence which has been fused with the contextual technology and lifestyles of the late 1940s.

The game takes place in the ruins of Washington D.C. 200 years after the holocaust. Many landmarks remain partially intact including the White House, Lincoln memorial, Jefferson memorial and the Washington monuments. The ruins of Washington are referred to as "The Capital Wasteland" where many survivors live in settlements. Many people were killed during the nuclear war and many of the survivors from the vaults were met with the severity of the wasteland when the vault doors opened. The wasteland is almost completely deviod of healthy food, water and natural life because of the levels of radiation. The economy has been scrapped and the currency has been changed to bottle caps.

Many animals have mutated and now occupy the Capital Wasteland. Wild dogs, radscorpions, mirelurks, mole rats, yao guai, giant ants, fire-breathing ants, deathclaws etc... all of which are hostile and a threat to the player. However, mutated animals are not the only threats in the wasteland; feral ghouls, super mutants, malfunctioning robots, slavers and raiders will also serve as a threat to the player.
