In the absence of Wayne Rooney and the already injured Robin van Persie, Juan Mata was arguably Manchester United’s leading star for the trip to Newcastle.
Much had been suggested that Manchester United would rest key players ahead of the Bayern Munich clash, but Juan Mata made sure the Red Devils head to Munich in high spirits after a wonderful display.
The Spanish international midfielder opened the scoring the first-half with a beautifully executed 20-yard free-kick which flew into the top corner – leaving Robert Elliot in the Newcastle net with no chance.
Manchester United’s big January transfer window signing doubled the visitors’ lead shortly after the break after getting on the end of Javier Hernandez’s cut-back and clinically wrong-footing the Newcastle shot-stopper from close range.
Manchester United and Juan Mata’s afternoon didn’t finish there, as David Moyes’ men punished a lacklustre Newcastle side with a further two goals to complete a 4-0 rout.
It had been a difficult start for Juan Mata, but in recent weeks the United star has flourished as a result of playing in his favoured number 10 role.
After the game, Mata took to Instagram to upload a celebratory photo and express his delight at the result.
He left a simple message in relation to his recent goalscoring run, saying: ‘Great win! Very happy. Let the run continue’
