Tottenham morning news: Defender linked with exit; rival boss admits midfielder interest

Jan Vertonghen

A select round-up of news relating to Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is reportedly a target for former Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas.

The Portuguese coach is now at Zenit St Petersburg, and the Express have picked up on reports from Portugal that claim the Russian club could make their move this summer.

Vertonghen’s future has been in some doubt with a lack of Champions League football potentially being a deal-breaker in terms of a long-term stay at White Hart Lane.

In other news, Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has revealed that he was interested in bringing Spurs midfielder Lewis Holtby to Villa Park before his eventual loan switch to Fulham.

In quotes published by the Express & Star, Lambert said, “The level was too high for us on that (the financial) side of it.

He’s a good player. I remember him when he was at Schalke. Obviously Tottenham are his parent-club and they’ll have a big say in what happens to him. It’s probably his strongest position as a number 10.”

With Christian Eriksen also at his strongest playing in that position only time will tell if both he and Holtby can forge long-term careers in North London.
