Inter technical director Piero Ausilio is close to agreeing a deal for Cruzeiro midfielder Nilton Ferreira Junior after a trip to South America.
The Nerazzurri are looking to rebuild the squad in the summer after a disappointing 2013-14 campaign.
Coach Walter Mazzarri faces a battle simply to secure Europa League football for next term, which is rumoured to be essential if he is to keep his job.
Inter have already started to assemble a new-look side for next year with Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic having agreed to sign.
And now it seems that Inter transfer guru Ausilio is close to adding a Brazilian midfielder being labelled the successor to Esteban Cambiasso to the Inter squad.
Cambiasso has been a key man for Inter since arriving from Real Madrid in 2004 and has made over 300 appearances for the Nerazzurri, but he is now 33 and may not have much longer left at the top level.
The Turin-based newspaper believes that the fee for Nilton will be between £4m and £5m.
The 26-year-old defensive midfielder was included in the Brazilian championship's Team of the Season for 2013 and is seen by many as a rising star of Brazilian football.
