According to media reports Mario Mandzukic can chose which part of London he wants to play in next season. Both Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing him. However, there is no need for him to leave his current club Bayern, where he has been showing excellent form for the last two years.
In the last Champions League match against Manchester United he demonstrated once again that he can give the team extra quality that they do not have without him. He came on when the team was 1-0 down and provided the assist for Bastian Schweinsteiger to make it 1-1.
He is the player for those kind of moments when you urgently need a goal and not another tiki-taka-player. That is why it remains unlikely that Bayern will let him go despite Robert Lewandowski arriving next season. They will have enough matches in all competitions so that both strikers will get enough playing time.
Apart from that he would not be the right striker for the two English teams anyway, as they should look more for a technically skilled striker who can participate actively in the attacking game.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea have most of their goals scored from midfield and they certainly won’t want to lose this strength, which is why they should look at a striker who is able to both score and set up goals.
Mandzukic is definitely not that kind of striker. Last season he scored 15 goals in the Bundesliga and provided only one assist, and this season his record to date reads 17 goals and five assists. The Croatian is clearly better at scoring goals than at setting them up.
However, there is now a young German striker who would fit perfectly into that profile. Kevin Volland, a 21-year-old striker from Hoffenheim, is already said to be the new Miroslav Klose because of his skills to prepare and score goals.
Last season he scored six goals and gave nine assists, and this season he has improved these numbers up to nine goals and nine assists so far. These numbers are even more impressive when you think that he does not play for one of the top teams of the Bundesliga.
Volland and his Brazilian partner Roberto Firmino are the reasons why Hoffenheim have already scored 63 goals, more than any other team in the Bundesliga apart from Bayern.
Volland is right now the biggest striking talent in Germany and it’s only a question of time when we will see him at a bigger club. Dortmund have been highly linked with him and last December there were several reports of interest from Premier League clubs. Right now he is valued at 18million Euros, but if he continues like that this amount will soon rise.
Especially Arsenal do not have such bad cards to sign him, as the pressure for him there would not be as high there as it would probably be at the Blues. Chelsea fans expect from Mourinho a real world-class striker and probably would be disappointed if he presented them with someone from a mid-table Bundesliga side.
Wenger however has a knack for signing young German players and this would be the perfect environment for him to develop. If Volland plays his cards right, he could become the number one striker in the German national team when Klose retires after the World Cup.
Once he has that position, it will be a lot more difficult for Arsenal and Chelsea to sign him, so maybe this summer is the right time to make their move.
