While the veteran England international looks set to depart Stamford Bridge this summer, Bertrand’s future looks well and truly up in the air.
Cesar Azpilicueta has been pushed across to his unnatural flank to feature at left-back for the bulk of the campaign and with the Spaniard excelling he looks like he has made the position his own.
Jose Mourinho recently admitted that Bertrand may well have a future at Stamford Bridge, with the versatile wideman getting Premier League experience this season at Aston Villa.
However, in his ten appearances for Paul Lambert’s men, how do his stats compare to Azpilicueta and Cole?
|Name||Team||Pos||Error Lead To Goal / apps||Error Lead To Shot / apps||Outfielder Block / apps||Blocked Cross / apps||Won Tackle / apps||Effective Clearance / apps||Aerial Won / apps||Interception Won / apps|
The table above shows the trio’s defensive stats for the season, with the attributes collated on an average per game basis to nullify the fact that Bertrand has played significantly fewer games than the other two.
All three are not error prone, with none of them committing an error that leads to a goal and one Cole making 0.08 errors per game leading to an opposition shot.
Bertrand has been the most effective at blocking shots, with the Villa loanee averaging 0.40 per game.
However, after this Azpilicueta’s attributes start to impress, with the Spaniard clearly performing the best of the three over the course of the season.
The former Marseille man has on average blocked the most opposition crosses, won the most tackles, made the most clearances, won the most aerial battles and made the most interceptions.
When comparing Bertrand and Cole, the younger man comes out trumps in four of the six categories.
With Chelsea usually having the bulk of possession and urged to attack opponents, it is worthwhile looking at the respective attacking statistics that the three full-backs contribute.
|Name||Team||Pos||Goal Assist / apps||Total Att Assist / apps||Ontarget Scoring Att / apps||Accurate Cross / apps||Apps||Mins|
When looking at the table above, Bertrand wins in one of the four categories in that he has more shots on target per game than the other two.
However, Cole has provided more assists this season than his team-mates and also offered the most chances to team-mates to have a shot.
Finally, Azpilicueta has the most accurate crossing of the three players, arguably the most important attacking quality for a full-back.
