Manchester United fans react on Twitter to Hummels performance in Madrid - 'Shadow of his former self'

Manchester United target Mats Hummels was at the heart of the Dortmund defence which struggled in Madrid.

While Manchester United’s defence held firm against Bayern Munich earlier this week, one of their reported main transfer targets for this summer, Mats Hummels, struggled as BVB went down to a heavy defeat at Real Madrid.

The German side lost the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final in the Spanish capital 3-0 and while Hummels couldn’t be faulted for work rate and effort, he played in a defence which got torn apart.

Goals from former Tottenham star Gareth Bale, former United forward Cristiano Ronaldo and reported Chelsea transfer target Isco were enough to help see Carlo Ancelotti’s men over the line before they head off for Germany ahead of the second leg.

Hummels was believed to also be a main transfer target for Barcelona but considering the transfer ban which has just been handed to the Spanish champions, it’s unlikely they will be able to move for the German any time soon.

The 25-year-old enjoys a reputation as one of the most talented central defenders in Europe and he has several characteristics which would help him settle into the United back four, as Nemanja Vidic’s long term replacement.

What United have working against them is the fact they may not be a Champions League team next season.

They are still very much in their tie against Bayern Munich after the first leg ended 1-1 and if they can scrap through to the last four, winning the competition is their only chance of getting into the tournament next season.

If United pull it off then their chances of signing Hummels increase but if they fail, he’s likely to opt to stay at BVB or opt for another side, which is playing in Europe’s biggest cup competition.

Here’s what Manchester United fans had to say about his performance on Twitter, some full of praise and others not so much.
