News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.
Following Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich on Tuesday night in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie at Old Trafford, striker Wayne Rooney has been accused of diving to get Bastian Schweinsteiger sent off.
Rooney responded against the claims: "I don't really want to say what he said, but I thought it was a foul. If I didn't get out of the way he could have hurt me, he's gone in with his studs and the referee has booked him, so it's not my decision.”
However, Joey Barton has attacked Rooney’s professionalism over the issue, comparing him to Ballon d' Or winner and former United favourite Cristiano Ronaldo.
"Our players are not world class. Wayne Rooney could have been but look at his mentality compared to Cristiano Ronaldo - they're polar opposites. Why does Ronaldo achieve what he has achieved and Rooney doesn't?” he said.
"Well when you see Rooney smoking cigarettes, does he live his life correctly? People who have worked with both say Ronaldo was in the gym, honing his game.”
"The level of discipline Ronaldo has for his profession is the reason he is the best player in his position and the reason Rooney isn't," added Barton.
Manchester United take on Newcastle United away on Saturday afternoon. Both teams are currently suffering an injury crisis ahead of the game.
The Magpies are missing five players ahead of the clash with the Red Devils as United will be without Robin van Persie who remains injured with doubts over the fitness of Rafael, Ryan Giggs and Jonny Evans.
In transfer news, reports have emerged that United will have to offer £40 million for Toni Kroos to convince Bayern Munich to sell the Germany international.
Sources also claim United will head out to Portugal on another scouting mission to assess William Carvalho ahead of a possible move this summer.
