Michael Carrick enjoyed being out on the Old Trafford pitch last night facing Europe’s best in Bayern Munich.
It was always going to be tough for the reigning Premier League champions as Bayern Munich rolled into town.
The Bundesliga champions remain unbeaten in their domestic league – a run stretching over 50 matches – and they haven’t lost a game since Manchester City beat them at the Allianz Arena last year.
Under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, a number of Manchester United players have already been accustomed to his possession-based style as they faced a Barcelona team managed by the Catalan boss.
Michael Carrick in particular has been on the receiving end of some ‘carousel passing’, though to his credit, last night he handled Bayern Munich’s midfield much better.
For those Manchester United players who have witnessed some glory nights at Old Trafford, they would certainly prefer to be in them – and be outplayed – than not be involved at all.
Following Manchester United’s Champions league quarter-final 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich, Michael Carrick took to Twitter to praise his teammates and fans for another special night at Old Trafford.
Another special night at OT. Support was great boys played well now it's all on next week. Gotta try n get to sleep first tho. #WideAwake— Michael Carrick (@carras16) abril 1, 2014
The response he received, however, was arguably not what he was expecting. Due to his previous struggles against the famed Tiki-Taka, a rival supporter responded by mocking his previous static displays.
@carras16 and you were just standing there watching it all happen as per?— Sam Trapp (@SamTrapp) abril 2, 2014
Not one to lay down, Carrick was happy to point out that he had the best view of Bayern’s brilliance in the house, whereas the Reds’ players and fans haven’t tasted Champions League football since the 2009/10 season.
Will Michael Carrick play Champions League football again beyond this season?
