Atletico Madrid on-loan Brazilian star Diego netted a 30-yard wonder goal during last night’s 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp.
Diego Ribas de Cunha, formally known as Diego, set the Nou Camp alight last night with an absolute belter.
After a drab first half between Spanish giants Barcelona and Atletico Madrid during their Champions League quarter-final clash, Diego second-half cracker sparked the game into life.
The 29-year-old received a quick freekick, and without hesitation took two strides forward before unleashing a wild shot which flew into the top right-hand corner of Pinto’s net and left the hosts stunned.
Barcelona gradually came back into the match and scored a wonderful equaliser themselves, but it was Diego’s unstoppable strike which hands Diego Simeone’s men a slight advantage going into next week’s second leg in Madrid.
Diego’s transfer situation is slightly bizarre. Once a teammate of Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil whilst at Werder Bremen, he has had problems at current club Wolfsburg and despite arguably their most influential player, he looks set to leave the club this summer when his contract expires.
The Brazilian international playmaker returned to Atletico Madrid on-loan for the remainder of the season, despite their being reported interest from Arsenal.
His primary reason for joining his former club Atletico was to play in the Champions League, and he has certainly done that with a bang.
Despite his heroics, Diego is not a regular at the Vicente Calderon and his future remains a doubt.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is said to be a keen admirer, and for such a talented player, the Frenchman could certainly do worse than attempting to bring Diego to the Emirates this summer to add more quality in the final third.
