Chelsea loanee receives historical homage for fabulous performance

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is to be recognised in the museum of Athletic Bilbao.

The young Chelsea shot-stopper was the star player as Atletico Madrid became the first visiting side to beat Athletic Bilbao in La Liga at their new San Mames stadium.

Diego Simeone’s men defeated Athletic Bilbao 2-1 thanks to goals from Diego Costa and Koke, but the star of the show was shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian international made a number of top quality stops to preserve the visitors lead, and he deservedly grabbed the plaudits after the game.

According to Basque paper Deia, as a result of Courtois’ heroics, the Athletic Bilbao board have asked for the shot-stopper’s match-day shirt to be honoured and displayed in their new San Mames museum.

It’s a great tribute for the Chelsea’s young star, and it goes far to show how much he has accomplished in such a sort career.

Courtois, at just 21 years of age, has already won a host of trophies, including the Europa League, European Super Cup and the Copa Del Rey since joining the Rojiblancos on loan.

His form at Atletico Madrid has certainly impressed boss Diego Simeone and his staff, and it has ultimately caused somewhat of a dilemma for parent club Chelsea.

The Blues already count on one of the world’s best shot-stoppers Petr Cech, but with Courtois displaying such good form in Spain, they simply can’t afford to sell him and miss out on his talents.

It is widely stated, however, that Thibaut Courtois is unwilling to return to Stamford Bridge to be Petr Cech’s back-up. Therefore, a reported compromise has been put in place where he will sign a new long-term contract at Chelsea but spend yet another year in Madrid on loan – benefiting all parties involved.
