HITC’s Best of April Fools Gaming Pranks 2014

Neverwinter April Fools Day 2014

Following a tidal wave of April Fools Day madness - including Half Life 3, and Optimus Prime in Titanfall - we've brought you a handful of our favourites.

April Fools day has been and gone once again, and with it the abundance of pranks that various internet outlets pull to try and test our gullibility. We’ve listed a few of our favourites from yesterday for you below – how many did you think were genuine? Even for a millisecond?

Google Maps: Pokemon Challenge

Whilst part of this prank was actually real, with Google updating the Google Maps app for iOS and Android to hide Pokemon all over the world for you to find, the actual joke part of the stunt was that Google are hiring a Pokemon Master, as detailed in the video below. It shows people using augmented reality on their mobile phones, climbing mountains, crossing deserts, and sailing oceans to locate all of the 151 Pokemon strewn about the world. We’re yet to hear if anyone has actually been invited to the Googleplex, as stated in the video, but it would be cool, eh?

Francis plays Half Life 3

Youtuber, Boogie2988, also known by his alter-ego Francis, posts videos relating to the world of video games. Yesterday he posted a video entitled ‘WATCH ME PLAY FIRST 30 MINUTES OF HALF LIFE 3’, with a description of ‘I GOT TO PLAY THE FIRST 30 MINUTES OF HALF LIFE THREE GAIZ. OMFG. WATCH ME PLAY.’ Blatantly an April fools prank, but with a subscriber base of 1.7 million users, this was sure to warrant at least a few curious clicks. As at the time of writing this article the video has received 175,137 views. You can watch the video below, if you really want to watch a man stare at his PC screen for 26 minutes.

Blizzard Outcasts

Taking some of the more down-trodden and side-line characters from Blizzard’s universes, Blizzard Outcasts is a beat-em-up game where the underdogs reign supreme. With characters such as Wirt and Deckard Cain from Diablo, and even a Battlecruiser from StarCraft. Take a look at the ‘official’ game page, and the trailer below.

Optimus Prime DLC for Titanfall

A trailer is over on IGN’s website, for the new Optimus Prime DLC in Titanfall. The leader of the Autobots is shown as a Titan you can call down and pilot, wielding a huge axe, and even transforming into a truck at the end. Take a look at the trailer below.

Neverwinter playable dragon race

With all the other races available, the developers figured it’d be a good idea to let you play as a dragon. From a little ‘dragonling’ all the way up to an ‘epic gigantic dragon’, you will also be able to don gear and ride your steed. However, the devs warn that one of the issues is they’re a ‘little OP in PVP’, but they’ll clear that up soon. Check out the trailer below.

The Witcher 3 mocap session gone wrong

When repeating all of those motions for a mocap session, the performer is bound to get a little frustrated – especially when being told what he’s doing isn’t good enough or ‘still feels a little bit feminine,’ when trying to portray a masculine monster-hunter. Have a gander at the video below, and see what the performer’s frustration produces.
