Last night presented Manchester United with the opportunity to face up against a player they have been strongly linked with signing this summer in the form of Toni Kroos.
Kroos had a decent game in a Bayern Munich midfield which dominated United for most of the match, he protected possession well and looked like a potentially very good investment on the part of the club.
So how did he shape up against the players who started in United’s midfield; Antonio Valencia, Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs and Danny Welbeck over on the left hand side.
Kroos outperformed all of United’s midfielders with a passing accuracy percentage of 96%.
The United midfielder with the highest passing accuracy was Fellaini on 75%, Carrick with 74% and Welbeck with 73%.
It suggests Kroos would be just as effective, if not more so, in terms of passing against United’s current crop of midfield stars.
Kroos also made more passes than any United player during the game with 92, only Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger produced more.
Kroos also outperformed the entire United side in terms of shots with three efforts.
Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney led the way with two efforts each, but no straight up midfielders managed a single shot on goal for the home side.
Kroos had 107 touches on the ball last night, which eclipses the 65 produced by Valencia, United’s best performing midfielder in this area.
That suggests that Kroos has a very good understanding of where to be and how to roam around in a midfield, looking for the smallest chink in the opposition’s armour to exploit.
Kroos had a 100% success rate last night in terms of long balls, finding his intended target with all 12 of the passes that he played.
The only United midfielder who could get near him was Carrick, who played 11 long balls but only four of them found their intended target.
The German is just as effective spraying passes over long distances as he is playing short and simple balls.
