It appeared the transfer speculation surrounding Hoffenheim midfielder Roberto Firmino had been put to bed after the player agreed a new deal with the German club.
That was six days ago, and yet just a few days later, the Daily Mail ran a story claiming Everton maintained their interest in the player and could make a move for him.
Not long ago, I wrote an article claiming that Firmino would be the ideal signing for Liverpool. An attacking midfielder with the ability to both score and create, the 22-year-old has already netted 20 goals this season and set up another 15.
Not bad for someone who is not even a striker!
But if the reports are true and Roberto Martinez is still monitoring the Brazilian with a possible offer on the horizon, it would be prove just how seriously the Toffees should now be taken, while delivering a huge blow to their Merseyside rivals in the process.
With the prospect of Champions League football looking more than just a pipe-dream for the Goodison Park faithful, Martinez and his players could be on the verge of something amazing. And Firmino would be the perfect addition to a squad who would be in desperate need of reinforcements if Europe’s elite competition is reached.
Yet if Firmino’s new contract has not taken him off the market just merely increased his potential price-tag, expect the Reds to fight hard for a player who would dazzle in the Premier League, be that in blue or in red.
