The French international midfielder has been at Marseille since 2006, and following a string of decent performances this season, he has caught the attentions of a number of top European clubs.
Amongst those taking a reported interest in the midfielder North London duo Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, while Liverpool themselves have been heavily linked, as reported by The Mirror earlier this year.
Mathieu Valbuena, 29, is an attacking midfielder who can play both centrally and from the wing. In 27 Ligue 1 appearances, he has played a total of 75 key passes and leads the clubs assist charts.
As a result of Marseille’s disappointing campaign, a top three spot and Champions League football for next season is all but beyond them.
Consequently, the club may be forced into selling off their top stars and €10 million rated Valbuena has already expressed a desire to depart.
The player reportedly showed an interest in joining Valencia during the January transfer window, and Juan Antonio Pizzi’s men will tempt him with the lure of a higher standard of football.
One team who could benefit from Valbuena moving to Valencia is current Premier League leaders Liverpool, even if they miss out on him.
The Reds have been linked with a move for Valencia midfielder Dani Parejo – another attacking midfielder.
The 24-year-old – who once had a failed loan spell at QPR – has transformed into a wonderful creative talent. In 21 La Liga games, he has contributed to six goals and tops the club’s charts for average passes per game and key passes.
Dani Parejo would fit in well with Brendan Rodgers’ pass and move style, and his ability on the ball would delight the Liverpool crowd.
Should Mathieu Valbuena become a Valencia player this summer, it may just be the green light needed for Liverpool to snap up one of La Liga’s rising stars.
