The Chelsea boss caused quite a stir in Madrid when he recently criticised his former club’s performance under new boss Carlo Ancelotti.
Real Madrid currently lie third in La Liga, two points behind Clasico rivals Barcelona and three points behind city-rivals Atletico Madrid.
Los Blancos were comfortably leading the table, however, two losses in succession against Barcelona and then Sevilla meant they dropped down to third – prompting Mourinho to have a jibe.
The Portuguese boss told Eurosport that he fully expected them to be leading the table after Barcelona had dropped more points this season than in the last three years during Mourinho’s reign in the Spanish capital.
Carlo Ancelotti responded by telling the self-proclaimed Special One that his team are still in the hunt for La Liga this season, whereas last season the league was all but wrapped up in March as Barcelona finished the season 15 points clear at the top.
In the build up to Real Madrid’s Champions League tie with Borussia Dortmund, Madrid-based paper Marca asked fans to vote which side is better.
Over 70% so far has voted in favour of Carlo Ancelotti’s current Real Madrid team, believing they have improved on last year.
The Spanish giants are bidding to win a record tenth Champions League crown – often dubbed as La Decima – and still have a date with Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey final later this month.
It promises to be an exciting end of the season in Spain, and Jose Mourinho’s comments may just give Ancelotti and his men the added motivation to create history.
Are Real Madrid better this season under Carlo Ancelotti?
