Southampton owe much of their success this season to the outstanding form of their next generation. The likes of James Ward-Prowse, Calum Chambers and, to a lesser extent, Harrison Reed have all played their part. But it is full-back Luke Shaw who continues to generate the most headlines.
The 18-year-old has made 32 appearances for the Saints this season. He also won his first senior England cap in the recent friendly against Denmark. And with a place on the plane to Brazil 2014 very much a possibility, it is no surprise there is so much buzz around the player.
With the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United reportedly hovering, the future looks very bright for a player who recently said the speculation around him is not as important as the games still to come for Maurcio Pochettino’s men this season.
But expect the buzz to get even louder after Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport named Shaw in their Top 10 teenagers in world football.
Coming in at number eight on the list, Shaw is in very good company, with players from Manchester United, Chelsea, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain among those joining him.
It is another boost for a player enjoying a wonderful season. The only question for Saints fans is how long they can keep him at St Mary’s.
