Revealed: Arsenal's win ratio with Walcott vs without Walcott - Key loss?

Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier claims Arsenal's title charge was killed off by Theo Walcott's injury. How right is he?

In Theo Walcott, Arsenal have a game changer who has proven his value in recent years with vital goals in big matches.

Only this season he netted the winner in the North London derby in September, but injury has badly affected his campaign.

He missed much of the early part of the season with an ankle injury, only to return in red hot form in December. Sadly his campaign was ended by a cruciate knee ligament injury in early January, which also forces him out of the World Cup.

Former Liverpool and Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier told Talksport yesterday that he believes losing the forward has been critical to Arsenal's disappearing title hopes.

He said: "At this moment the big loss for them was Theo Walcott. Theo was giving them some depth and some speed up front and once they lost him the results suffered.

"Particularly in big games he’s a threat and he can make goals and score goals. He had improved a lot so it’s a shame he’s not playing at the moment."

It's a fair and common observation that Arsenal have missed Walcott, but do the statistics bear this out to be accurate?

Here's a look at how the team have fared with and without the injured star:

With Walcott starting

NameWonDrawnLostPoints / playedGoals / playedWin ratioPlayed
Arsenal 6 1 2 2.1 1.89 66% 9

Without Walcott starting

NameWonDrawnLostPoints / playedGoals / playedWin ratioPlayed
Arsenal 13 6 4 1.95 1.70 56% 23

With Walcott in the side, Arsenal not only have a superior win ratio, but average more goals per game.

On such fine lines are titles won and lost - Arsenal are just six points off the top of the Premier League.

Had they won an extra 10 per cent of the games without Walcott, as per the differential, it would equate to a minimum of six points - and with six games to go, the Gunners may just be leading the title charge, without any of the top three still to play.
