Steve McManaman, who played nine years for Liverpool and won the Champions League with Real Madrid in 2000, doesn’t see any chance for Manchester United against Bayern in the Champions League quarter-final.
In an interview with Sport1 he stated that for him there is currently no better team in Europe than Bayern.
“Munich is in the moment the best team in Europe. It will be very, very difficult for Manchester. I think Bayern will win.”
One could think that the former English national player just wanted to be polite to his German interview partner, but a little bit later he really praised the team from the south of Germany.
“They are the best team and currently unbeatable. Nobody can defeat them at the moment.”
It really seems as if McManaman has fallen in love with Bayern’s team, although it probably isn’t so difficult for him as a former Liverpool player to see the Red Devils lose against the current Champions League holders.
“For me and for everyone else in England is Bayern the big favourite to win the Champions League. Of course they need a little bit of luck, but they are the strongest team; that much is clear.”
The positive thing for United players is that these kind of comments take the pressure from their shoulders. It seems as if nobody expects anything from them, when they head out onto the pitch against Bayern this evening.
Maybe the odds are not in Manchester United’s favour, but not only Steve McManaman knows that there have always been surprises in football and that the starting conditions will be the same for both teams. Afterwards we will know how reliable his expertise really was.
