Arsenal midfielder surely couldn't have that much bad luck.
Abou Diaby was scheduled to have returned to training for Arsenal on April 1 after more than a year out, a possibility which had appeared in advance could be an April Fool's Day wind-up.
While there were no official photos published by Arsenal of the Frenchman back in action, the timing of his scheduled return provided an opportunity for his fragility to be poked fun at.
French website Le Competiteur ran the headline: 'Abou Diaby relapse', their spoof article reading:
"In touching his first ball in training Abou Diaby injured again: "He leaned over to open the bag of balls and immediately felt pain in the right knee" tells his coach Arsene Wenger... This is the 74th of Abou Diaby injury since joining Arsenal in 2006, and only for the right leg.
"How is it that a guy more than 1m90 Abou Diaby is as much affected by the injury? Le Competitor has conducted the survey. According to testimony from former teammates at Clairefontaine, Abou Diaby was the victim of a curse ( shour thrown by the mother of one of his classmates at the after an argument with his son."
The French site was not the only one to poke fun at Diaby on April Fool's Day, with website the 89th Minute posting the following mock-up photo on their Twitter feed:
Arsenal fansite Vital Football meanwhile claimed in an April Fools prank of their own that Arsene Wenger had claimed Diaby would be in line to start against Everton in the Premier League this Saturday.
Diaby himself surely won't mind being a figure of fun, for the time for that is almost over. As he steps up his bid to return to match fitness and even gatecrash the French World Cup squad, he can't be beset by even more bad luck, can he?
