Tonight's match at Old Trafford ended up nothing like the media had been predicting.
It was a real battle, a contest between the skill and passing of German champions Bayern Munich and the bustle and commitment of English champs Manchester United.
And in such a match, as he so often has for United, Nemanja Vidic stood up and made his mark on a side widely accepted as the best in the world right now.
Vidic beat Manuel Neuer with a phemonenal header from a Wayne Rooney corner in the 58th minute, swivelling his head as he dived away from the ball but somehow managing to glance it into the net.
It was Vidic's 20th goal for United on his 291st appearance, and with just a handful of games left at the club before he moves to Inter Milan, it could be the last time United fans see the powerful Serb flying through the air to score one of his trademark headers.
For much of the game Vidic had helped marshal a resilient defence against Pep Guardiola's men, with fellow veteran Rio Ferdinand also superb. German star Bastian Schweinsteiger equalised soon after Vidic's header, and was latterly sent off in the closing stages.
