Cristiano Ronaldo learning how special Manchester United were

Cristiano Ronaldo United

Manchester United fans never booed Ronaldo, but Madrid supporters did just that this weekend.

This time last year the speculation was ramping up regarding a potential Cristiano Ronaldo return to Manchester United.

The £80 million is surely worth even more now, but closed the door on a return to Old Trafford when he signed a new contract with Real Madrid in the summer to take him up until 2018.

He may or may not be reflecting right now on whether sections of the club's support are deserving of his mercurial talents, after all.

During Madrid's 5-0 win over Rayo Vallecano at the weekend, Ronaldo was booed by sections of the support at the Bernabeu.

This was despite the heavy win and himself bagging the opener, fans reportedly frustrated with him trying to do too much on his own.

While Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric dismissed the jeers akin to a lover's tiff, the Real Madrid icon may well be wondering quite why he is receiving such treatment.

It may just be causing him to reflect on the fact that at his former club Manchester United, he was never once booed by supporters, even during the final weeks when doubts were emerging over his future.

It's surely too late now for United or Ronaldo to do anything about it, but the booing will be a mental obstacle for the Portuguese forward to overcome on his bid to reach the top.

With 41 goals in La Liga and the Champions League already, Ronaldo's season is still nearing similar individual heights to his previous campaigns in Madrid.

Do the fans take him for granted, or did they simply see him dip below his usual exceptional standards and decide to let know about it?

Likely a bit of both, but as he seeks to prove a point against Dortmund this week, he will know that the same unflinching support he enjoyed at Old Trafford won't exist if he does not perform.
