The way Lucas Piazon began this season at Vitesse Arnhem, it seemed Jose Mourinho would have no choice but to bring him back to Chelsea this summer.
The Brazilian’s form was outstanding, as his 11 goals and eight assists prior to Christmas testified.
Since then, the starlet has hit a rough patch that has seen him fail to find the net in his last 11 Eredivisie matches. But having only just turned 20, it was always going to be a big ask for Piazon to maintain his outstanding form for an entire season.
Despite that dip, Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport has voted the young Chelsea loanee as the second-best young player in the world today.
His inclusion is slightly strange as the publication actually hails that the top 60 is for players under the age of 20, but it seems players have been included who have only entered their third decade in 2014.
With the players currently ahead of Piazon in the Stamford Bridge pecking-order – and with more new faces likely to arrive this summer – it will be hard for him to break into Mourinho’s first-team in the short-term.
But he clearly has the talent and appears to be highly-rated across Europe, so surely it is only a matter of time before Chelsea fans get to see him turning out for their club on a regular basis.
